ouch

I came off my bike on what should have been my first day back to work on Monday. Ouch! And don’t worry, I’m OK.

I can’t actually remember much about it although I have a foggy recollection that the battery cover popped off my bike light so maybe I was trying to fix it when the accident happened.

At least it was on the bike path so there were no cars to worry about and a doctor from my clinic happened to cycle past a little while later and she stopped to help me and called the ambulance. I don’t remember much after that until I woke up at the hospital. The ambulance people must have managed to fold up my bike and bring it along because it was sitting in the corner of the emergency room.

The tests showed there was nothing serious and no broken bones, just “severe concussion” and cuts and bruises. The hospital report describes me as a 53 year old “thin young man” which is quite nice really, I must have cycled off all the Christmas food already.

I’m booked in for a check up later today with the doctor who looked after me and called the ambulance so I can thank her in person. The first couple of days after the accident I was a bit confused and I kept repeating the same sentence over and over, but Wayne says I’m recovering well now and able to converse better. My bike of course doesn’t seem to have a scratch!

Unfortunately, although I’ve had a few extra days at home before going back to work next week, I haven’t been able to knit much because my wrists were swollen, and also because I haven’t been able to concentrate and I’ve been getting tired and sleepy easily.

I did do a little more work on my stranded colour work Christmas ball though. It only takes ten minutes or so to do a round and I figure the mental agility required to follow a chart and knit the pattern using two strands of yarn, one in each hand, is probably good therapy for my brain.

My tension knitting with both hands is still a bit wonky but I’m quite pleased anyway because in the beginning it felt like I’d never be able to do it at all. I’m not worried that the first attempt is a bit rubbish because I don’t like the yarn that I bought anyway, so I’m calling this one the prototype.

I know Bluebell has been around for fifty years but I have to wonder, why? The three loosely plied strands unravel so easily and it splits like crazy, if you can knit with this stuff all power to you. Nice colours though.

  1. Ouch indeed! Glad you didn’t suffer any broken bones or anything worse than you did. Hope your road to recovery is speedy!!!

  2. Thanks Staci, doing ok!

  3. Oh no- you poor thing! Happy to hear you are on the mend but sorry to hear that it interfered with your Christmas knitting ; ( I hope you’re not too shaken up- it is scary being reminded of how fragile we are.

Great work on busting out the colourwork again- looks lovely!

Take care and rest up xx

  4. Goodness, what a nasty tumble! And concussion too, I’m not surprised. I hope you’re fully recovered soon. And I’ll steer clear of Bluebell!

  5. Glad it wasn’t any worse – although it sounds scary enough. Hope you recover fully soon!

  6. Oh no! So sorry to hear about your bike crash! Hoping for a speedy recovery! Keep us all updated, sir!

  7. Poor you. I hope your recovery goes well.

  8. Q – Super ow! Hope you heal quickly!

  9. Ouch D: I don’t think I’ve ever had concussion before, somehow the idea that I would lose my mind a bit scares me more than any potential scrapes. Glad you’re starting to get better now, knitting cures all for sure 😉

  10. Shock! Horror!
Just relieved you’re ok on the mend.

  11. I just read in another post about your accident. I must have missed this earlier. Yikes! And ouch! Glad you’re recovering well. Please do take it easy and let others pamper you!

  12. Thank you to everyone who sent kind thoughts. I’m back at work this week, although only working half days, but will be back to usual next week. Also, my bike has returned from the repair shop where they found that my rear tyre had blown out so that’s what caused the accident. It tuns out that the lovely doctor who found me waited with me for 45 minutes until the ambulance arrived to take me to the hospital, although I only remember tiny snippets of it and I don’t remember the ambulance ride at all. Thanks again xx

  13. Oh no! I hope you are feeling better! Hope your search for other yarn is going well – nothing is worse than yarn that isn’t doing what you need it to!
