This is the fourth of six small book reviews of men’s knitwear designs if you’re a man who knits, or you knit for a man (or both!).
Knits men want by Bruce Weinstein is a great concept. It features a range of classic designs for sweaters, cardigans, socks, hats and scarves, all written for multiple gauges and sizes. Work out the gauge of your yarn and your size, plug in the numbers and cast on. Finished sizes for the sweaters range from 40 to 60 inches in 4 inch increments.
While the pattern concept is brilliant, it’s the tone of the book that rankles. Although written by a man and featuring men’s designs, it’s clearly directed solely towards women with the premise that all men are clueless twits. Chapters such as “Men are babies” and “Men are oblivious” just make me cringe. I suggest you ignore the writing altogether and just look at the patterns.
Do look at Jared Flood’s beautiful photographs though.
Have I knit anything from the book?
Yes! For my very first jumper I used the Basic Pullover design and I’m quite pleased with how it came out, except that even though I knit the smallest size it’s too big for me.
