Waking to the sound of temple bells

Wayne and I were talking about headphones this morning — mental note to take ear plugs to New York so we don’t get woken up by early morning traffic noise. It reminded me of my last trip to Sydney. I was amazed at how early the traffic noise started — by 5 am there so many people rushing around in the street outside my hotel window.

And suddenly I had a memory of waking up in Kyoto, in a little inn below 清水寺  Kiyomizudera, to the sound of the temple bell.

  1. you can always have recording of temple bells to wake up to! Somehow waking up noises really evoke memories of place. I lived in Athens for a couple of years next to a school and I always remember early morning school noises from the Marasleion and they evoke a smell of jasmine!

  2. I finds sounds and smells so evocative…
