The Mazda cat

If you’re ever walking down Elizabeth Street in Melbourne, outside the old GPO, cross over to the other side of the street, face towards Flinders Street Station and look up to your left and you’ll see this huge cartoon cat. It’s painted on the side of the Beehive building in Elizabeth Street, between Collins and Little Collins.

The cat is all that’s left from an old advertisement for Mazda light globes that stretched across the side of the whole building.  The rest of the advertisement was painted over a few years ago, but thankfully the cat is still there!

You can see a photo on Flickr (via the wonderful Gemma from Outre Gallery) of what it used to look like before it got painted over, and you can see some of Melbourne’s other faded old signs at Our fading past.
